Drywall is a low-cost product with a core of gypsum surrounded by kraft paper facings on both sides.

What Makes It A Green Product

Look for drywall made with 100% recycled, unbleached paper facings.
Paperless drywall is available.
Some drywall is made using synthetic or flue-gas gypsum, a waste product generated by utility companies.
Drywall can contain 75% or greater recycled content, including at least 10% post-consumer recycled content.
"Synthetic" drywall, produced from coal combustion by-products, which has the same purity standards as natural gypsum, is readily available.

Negative Environmental Considerations

The mining of raw gypsum creates habitat disruption.
The processing and shipping of drywall has negative environmental consequences because of the energy used and emissions from transport.
Drywall should be recycled at the end of its life to divert solid waste from landfills.
