About Interior Walls

Interior walls reduce noise throughout your home. Drywall is the single most commonly used material for interior walls.

Drywall

Drywall
CSI Division: 092900 | Residential Category: Drywall

Drywall is a low-cost product with a core of gypsum surrounded by kraft paper facings on both sides.

What Makes It A Green Product
  • Look for drywall made with 100% recycled, unbleached paper facings.
  • Paperless drywall is available.
  • Some drywall is made using synthetic or flue-gas gypsum, a waste product generated by utility companies.
  • Drywall can contain 75% or greater recycled content, including at least 10% post-consumer recycled content.
  • "Synthetic" drywall, produced from coal combustion by-products, which has the same purity standards as natural gypsum, is readily available.
Negative Environmental Considerations
  • The mining of raw gypsum creates habitat disruption.
  • The processing and shipping of drywall has negative environmental consequences because of the energy used and emissions from transport.
  • Drywall should be recycled at the end of its life to divert solid waste from landfills.
